Routine sanitary inspections are conducted of all food service establishments and retail food establishments, (restaurants, quick marts, grocery stores, bakeries, schools, taverns, etc). Investigations are also conducted at facilities due to the potential for and possible occurrence of foodborne illness or public complaints. Educational in-service programs are available for facilities and the general public. Plan review investigations are conducted on newly constructed facilities to insure compliance. Opening inspections are conducted before facilities can operate with a St. Clair County Health Department permit. Educational information is provided to the public and food service establishments through hand-outs, consultations, in-services and news releases. The educational information is provided to create an awareness of problems associated with improper food handling and poor personal hygiene. The focus of the program is to improve sanitation levels through compliance with St. Clair County Retail Food Establishment Sanitation Code and the Illinois Department of Public Health Foodservice Sanitation Code, thereby reducing the incidence of foodborne illnesses and to obtain a uniformly safe and wholesome product. The program focuses education and on several areas such as sanitary surveys, training seminars, plan reviews, complaint investigations, etc.
